The disadvantages of angry teaching

Naoto Muranaka (hereinafter, Muranaka)Currently, there is a growing trend throughout society to “prevent harassment” and “unaccept violence and abusive language,” but it seems that inappropriate coaching is still rampant in the sports world.

Looking at the trends in consultations to the hotline for violence and power harassment set up by the Japan Sport Association (“Hotline for Violence in Sports”), while obvious cases of violence such as corporal punishment are decreasing, verbal abuse, discrimination, ignoring, and running as punishment are on the rise. In a way, it can be said that the methods are becoming more insidious.

Despite being recognized as a problem, why does inappropriate coaching in sports continue to persist?

I think the reason behind this is the strong belief that “you can’t become stronger unless you go through hardship.” Looking back on your own experiences, what do you think, Mr. Oyama?

Kana Oyama (hereinafter, Oyama)I think you’re right. I used to think that in order to win, I had to train hard and go through a lot of hardship. But now my way of thinking has changed a lot.

VillageWhen we are scolded or subjected to verbal or physical abuse, strong negative emotions arise. In an attempt to avoid this crisis, the brain goes into “defense mode.” In order to protect ourselves, we must act instantly, whether by fighting or fleeing. That’s why when the brain goes into defense mode, we act faster.

However, the scolding party misunderstands this and thinks, “See, after I spoke harshly, he changed,” or, “Scolding him like this is effective and has an immediate effect.” In reality, he is just “reacting” to the danger he feels, and he is not essentially changing or growing.

Mt. OyamaAh, I understand that from personal experience. When you get scolded, you do act faster. But you stop thinking.

VillageThat’s right. You may be able to react instantly, but you won’t be able to think for yourself. You won’t be able to think carefully or act independently or autonomously. The safest way to avoid getting scolded is to do as you’re told.
