Breast Cancer Awareness in Men: Breast cancer is the most aggressive type of cancer found in women. Now it is clear that men can also get breast cancer. In fact, male breast cancer accounts for 0.5-1 percent of all breast cancer cases. “It is a rare disease; Which is dangerous for men. But, according to various recent studies- the incidence of cancer in men is gradually increasing. Therefore, there is a need to make people aware about this,” said Dr. Dr. Kinjal Patel said while giving information to ‘The Indian Express’.
According to doctors- “Mammal breast cancer is usually diagnosed at an advanced age. Reason- Men ignore any lump or swelling in their breasts. “The risk of developing this cancer is generally around the age of 60, and the risk increases with age. Maximum cases of this disease are found in the age group of 70-75 years,” said Dr. Patel said.
A survey conducted by ‘Goyal et.al’ in 2020 revealed, “Approximately 81 percent of men in this age group were unaware of the symptoms of breast cancer and measures that can be taken for early and timely diagnosis. “We are in a time where, by intervening in the early stages of cancer, precision medicine can be given,” says the doctor. It is important to understand the risk factors for male breast cancer at this time, and if it is diagnosed early, it can be treated early.”

“The ‘Newberg Center for Genomic Medicine’ (NCGM) at Ahmedabad conducted a breast cancer awareness survey. It found that in a group of 231 individuals (male and female), about 78 per cent were unaware of male breast cancer,” said Dr Patel.
What are the risk factors for breast cancer in men??
Dr. Patel said, “There are many factors that increase the risk of breast cancer in men. Such as lifestyle factors, occupational exposure to carcinogens, family history of cancer, and genetics etc. In most cases, breast cancer in men can be caused by family history, high levels of estrogen, advanced age, and certain chromosomal abnormalities such as Klinefelter syndrome. Klinefelter syndrome is when males have an extra X chromosome, the condition is called ‘Klinefelter syndrome’. Normally, males have two types of chromosomes, X and Y. But, in this condition, males have both X chromosomes.

About 20 percent of men who develop breast cancer may have a mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, or in high-risk genes such as CHECK2, PTEN or PALB2,”
Doctors also explain, “Men with a BRCA2 gene mutation have a higher chance of developing breast cancer (seven in 100) than those with a BRCA1 gene mutation (one in 100). But it should be noted that men with BRCA1 and BRCA2 and other hereditary cancer risk factors for breast cancer should receive genetic counseling and testing.
“Especially if there is a family history of cancer, breast cancer screening can be beneficial. This helps you to diagnose the disease before it occurs. As a result, it is possible to slow down the progression of the disease and get proper treatment in time,” advises the doctor.
