Referreport
After the elections in Saxony and Thuringia, the formation of a government is imminent. When asked whether the CDU could join forces with the Left Party, Brandenburg’s CDU leader Redmann gave a clear answer.
Even after the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia, the Brandenburg CDU is sticking to the agreed taboo on coalitions with the Left and the AfD. “The incompatibility decision on the AfD and the Left applies,” CDU state leader Jan Redmann told the German Press Agency. “From Brandenburg’s point of view, there is no reason to question this.”
In Thuringia and Saxony, complicated government formations are imminent following Sunday’s elections. Following an incompatibility resolution by the federal party, the CDU is not allowed to form a coalition with either the AfD or the Left. The BSW is not included in this. In Brandenburg, a new state parliament will be elected on September 22nd.
CDU wants to appoint minister presidents in Saxony and Thuringia
The CDU wants to provide the Prime Minister in both Saxony and Thuringia. In Saxony, the Christian Democrats of Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer became the strongest force, while in Thuringia, Björn Höcke’s AfD, which the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifies as definitely right-wing extremist, is in the lead, but has no coalition partner in sight.
Thuringia’s CDU regional leader Mario Voigt initially did not want to commit himself to whether a government led by him would be tolerated by the Left Party. In Saxony – unlike in Thuringia – an alliance of the CDU, BSW and SPD would have a majority.
