In South America, Bolivia’s military surrounded the presidential palace and attempted a coup, but then retreated.
On the 26th, some armed army soldiers broke into the presidential palace in the central city of La Paz and surrounded the building. It is believed to be a coup plotted by General Zuniga, who was dismissed as commander-in-chief of the army, to demand the resignation of the president.
In response, President Arce issued a statement urging the nation to unite, saying, “We are standing firm against the coup.”
Zúñiga spoke with the president at the palace and the soldiers withdrew, but local media reported that Zúñiga was subsequently arrested by authorities.
Law enforcement officials have announced they will launch an investigation.
