[Ta Kung Pao News]The Bauhinia Research Institute released the latest public opinion survey results yesterday, 62.5% of citizens are satisfied with the performance of the SAR government, and 63.1% of citizens affirm the performance of Chief Executive John Lee. Regarding specific policy measures, citizens gave the highest evaluation to the SAR government’s performance in national security, with a satisfaction rate of 66.8%. The second and third highest satisfaction rates were respectively for work on solving housing problems (60.5%) and work on caring for people’s livelihood (54.8%).

Citizens most hope to strengthen economic revitalization

In all aspects of the work covered by the questionnaire, the satisfaction of the citizens is higher than the dissatisfaction, but there are still two aspects of work satisfaction that are less than 50%, namely, cultivating local talents (48.9%) and promoting the development of the financial market (45.2%). If measured by dissatisfaction, the three aspects of work with the highest citizen dissatisfaction are revitalizing the economy (39.9%), improving transportation (39%) and cultivating local talents (38.8%). 20.2% of the citizens have no opinion or do not know about the work of promoting the development of the financial market.

The Bauhinia Research Institute successfully interviewed 685 Hong Kong citizens aged 18 or above by random sampling via audio telephone from June 6 to 16, 2024. The survey questions involved citizens’ evaluation of the work performance of the SAR Government and the Chief Executive, as well as the evaluation of the SAR Government’s work in 12 specific policy areas, including maintaining national security, solving housing problems, protecting labor welfare, caring for people’s livelihood, encouraging childbirth, developing innovation and technology, revitalizing the economy, improving transportation, cultivating local talents and promoting the development of financial markets.

Measures such as “withdrawing spicy food” effectively respond to demands

The survey results show that the performance of Chief Executive John Lee and the current SAR government in the past two years has been generally recognized by the public. The Chief Executive and the SAR government have unswervingly assumed the important task of “first responsible person” in the legislation of Article 23 of the Basic Law. After the completion of the legislation, Hong Kong society, under the leadership of the SAR government, has focused on the economy, development, people’s livelihood and happiness. In the past six months, the SAR government has successfully won a number of central policies to support and benefit Hong Kong, promoted the interconnection of the capital markets of the Mainland and Hong Kong, strengthened Hong Kong’s role as an international financial center, expanded the opening of mainland cities for free travel to Hong Kong and Macao, and boosted the development of Hong Kong’s tourism industry. At the same time, in response to public opinion, the SAR government announced a comprehensive “withdrawal of the spicy” and suspended the implementation of garbage collection fees, effectively responding to the demands of the public.

The survey results also show that the general public has more expectations for the rapid recovery and development of the economy, better integration into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and enhancing Hong Kong’s international competitiveness.
