Sheikh Hasina Resigned as Bangladesh PM: There is an atmosphere of political instability in Bangladesh. After Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, Army Chief Waqir-uz-Zaman has announced an interim government. However, the establishment of a new government in Bangladesh in a peaceful environment and the coming to power of a development-oriented liberal government are important for India and other neighboring countries. Accordingly, the Government of India has clarified that it has taken the role of ‘wait and watch’ in the all-party meeting today. But along with the political consequences, these developments in Bangladesh are also expected to have economic consequences. One of them is the power generation project at Godda, Jharkhand, run by Adani Industries Group!

Violent protests took place in Bangladesh as a result of the agitation over the issue of reservation. The situation escalated until Sheikh Hasina resigned. Against this backdrop, a new government will be formed in Bangladesh and the future of political and economic affairs and its future will depend on the international policies of that government. One such financial transaction is the Power Purchase Agreement or PPA between Adani Powers and the Government of Bangladesh in 2017!

What is this deal?

In 2017, Adani Power Limited signed an agreement with Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPPB) for 25 years of electricity supply. The agreement was signed to supply 1496 MW electricity to Bangladesh from the company’s power generation plant at Godda, Jharkhand. This project at Godda is the first such project in India, which is fully designed to supply electricity internationally. 100 percent electricity from this project is sold to other countries. As per this agreement, all this electricity is currently being supplied to Bangladesh.

The implementation of this agreement started from 2023. Since then, this electricity supply from India to Bangladesh has been going on regularly. However, what will happen to this agreement due to the changing political situation in Bangladesh? Such a question is being raised.

What is the role of Adani Powers?

Moneycontrol has mentioned in a report that Adani Power Limited has clarified its position in this regard. “Adani Power has signed an agreement with Bangladesh Power Development Board. This board is responsible for providing the required amount of electricity in Bangladesh as per the planned plan. Therefore, Adani Power will continue to supply power to this board without any hindrance as per the scheduled schedule”, the company has clarified.

Attention to the role of the new government in Bangladesh

Meanwhile, what position does the new government to be established in Bangladesh take with regard to this agreement? Everyone has noticed this. If the new government takes a stance against the agreement, it is predicted that the regular operations of the project will be affected.
