According to Reuters, protests against the tax increase bill have been ongoing in various parts of Kenya for about a week, and when the bill was passed on the 25th, protesters in the capital, Nairobi, turned violent and stormed into parliament, leading to police firing.
At least 23 people have been killed and 30 injured so far.
In response to the intensifying demonstrations, President Ruto said in a speech on the 26th, “After listening sincerely to the voices of those who oppose the bill, I am making concessions,” and announced that he would not sign the tax increase bill and would withdraw it.
Meanwhile, some demonstrators have posted on social media that they will continue their protests, calling for the president to step down.
