“Taiwan’s Post-War Classic Hand-Drawed Construction Drawings Architecture Exhibition” was curated by Xu Mingsong, Shao Wenzheng, and Huang Weiting. The curatorial team expressed that due to the rupture of the times, the younger generation of architectural students ignored the rigor and delicacy of the construction production process, resulting in young students being unwilling to practice the real skill of drawing detailed design and construction drawings. However, in the older generation of Taiwanese architects or foreign architects who left works in Taiwan in their early years, this emphasis on the texture of things can still be seen through the delicate drawing production. These include the Memorial Hall of the Father of the Nation by Taiwan’s older generation architects such as Wang Dahong, the Lusiyi Church of Tunghai University by I.M. Pei, Chen Qikuan, and Zhang Zhaokang, the Sanxin Jia Shang Lang Building by Chen Renhe, and the Muzha Guide Palace Lingxiao Palace by Lee Chongyao, etc. There are foreign architects who left works in Taiwan in their early years, such as Gottfried Böhm, Germany’s first Pritzker Architecture Prize winner, whose first overseas work was Jingliao Holy Cross Catholic Church, and Swiss architect Justus Dahinden’s Taitung Gongdong Polytechnic Cathedral Building, and Bali Sacred Heart Girls’ High School built by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, Asia’s first Pritzker Architecture Prize winner.

For this exhibition in Taitung, a special space has been specially opened for the exhibition of post-war architecture in Taitung. The works include the one designed by Swiss architect Karl Freuler, the Bethlehem Taiwan District Institute, and the one designed by Da Xingden. Four works including the classroom building and library of Gongdong High School, and the auditorium of Taitung Girls’ High School designed by Wu Mingxiu. In addition, a special exhibition of Lu Ayu’s architecture was planned to pay tribute to the construction workers who have worked in the local area all their lives. We also hope to tell all outsiders that Taitung not only has beautiful natural scenery, but also has wonderful and varied architectural landscapes.
