[Reporter Dong Baiting/Taipei Report]In response to the 2050 net-zero carbon emission goal, the Taiwan Visual Arts Alliance (hereinafter referred to as “Visual Alliance”) used a questionnaire to survey 250 groups of independent studios, alternative spaces, galleries, art museums, art parks, etc. The art organization released the “Taiwan Visual Arts Sustainability Action Research Report” to propose sustainability strategies that fit Taiwan’s local context.

Vision Alliance stated that this research report is the first survey of sustainability awareness in the domestic visual arts industry. According to the research results, more than half of the respondents believe that art is related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is within reach. Take sustainable actions within the scope, including artistic creation and production related to climate issues, daily energy saving and carbon reduction activities, etc. Through lecture tours, it can be seen that art workers in the east have integrated sustainable actions into their lives and creations, such as creating creations with collected materials and paying attention to issues such as the relationship between land and humans.

Vision Alliance pointed out that most institutions do not have in-depth knowledge on how to calculate carbon emission data and how to write sustainability reports, which shows that there is currently a lack of open and transparent arts carbon emissions database for reference, and there is no way to communicate with international arts and cultural institutions. Or if other industries are simultaneously comparing values, there is a lack of communication channels with the outside world, and the impact is still limited.

In addition, a sustainability awareness questionnaire was also developed for the general public as a control group with visual arts workers/organizations. The survey results show that the general public tends to support art workers/organizations who are willing to reduce carbon emissions. It is expected that Artists/institutions can be more conscious about actually reducing carbon emissions in artistic activities.

Vision Alliance emphasizes that in the future, it can establish a database of art sustainability practices to accumulate and share local creative action cases; it will further develop an art sustainability survey model suitable for Taiwan and help promote the writing of “sustainability reports” by art institutions.
