Arrest warrant issued for Venezuela opposition presidential candidate as confusion continues over presidential election results

In Venezuela, where chaos continues over the presidential election, prosecutors have requested an arrest warrant for the opposition candidate who claims to have won on suspicion of forgery of official documents and other offences.

According to Reuters and other news agencies, an arrest warrant was issued on the 2nd for Gonzalez, who ran as an opposition candidate in July’s presidential election, on charges of forgery of public documents and inciting disobedience to the state.

In the presidential election, election authorities announced that incumbent anti-American leftist President Maduro won a third term with a majority of the votes. Meanwhile, the opposition claims to have obtained roughly 80% of the total vote results and based its own tally, Gonzalez won with 67% of the votes.

The election results were reported to be in the hands of Maduro, who is increasingly becoming a dictator, and citizens who had doubts about the election results protested, demanding the disclosure of detailed voting results. Demonstrations spread across the country, with 27 people killed and approximately 2,400 arrested so far.

G7 foreign ministers, including U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, have also called for details of the election results to be made public.

However, election authorities have not released detailed vote count results, citing website hacking.

Gonzalez has not been seen in public since the day after the election, and the opposition has responded to the request for an arrest warrant by saying their actions will only unite us more.
