Chicago ∙ A college student from Chicago was killed in an off-campus shooting near the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Kara Welsh, 21, of Plainfield was killed Friday night. Police said the student was shot during an argument with an acquaintance.

UW Whitewater Assistant Chancellor Ryan Callahan said Cara Welsh, who was killed, was an outstanding gymnast and a 2023 national champion. Police have arrested a 23-year-old accused in the murder of a student. Police have not yet released his name.
