Apple Watch Ultra: This smartwatch is not what you think

Referreport

With the new Apple Watch Ultra, the iPhone manufacturer has literally made a big mistake; some even consider it to be a pretty ugly smartwatch. Intended solely for a manageable group of users. But I have a different opinion, this watch is much more. Let’s talk about it in the current edition of GIGA’s weekend column.

My colleague, who is unnamed at this point, finds it ugly, but I at least find it damn interesting. The Apple Watch Ultra polarizes. There can be a lot of debate about taste and that’s why my column won’t be about that today. For me, Apple’s sophisticated sales strategy is undisputed. For me, the Apple Watch Ultra is not only the most exciting product of the last keynote, but also the key to significantly more sales in the area of Apple smartwatches.

Apple Watch Ultra vs. Apple Watch Edition: Who will win?

Let’s be honest: From a technical point of view, there has been little difference between an expensive Apple Watch made of stainless steel or titanium and the much cheaper aluminum model. If you were smart, you bought the cheaper model; the expensive steel and edition versions seemed to be less likely to be found over the counter.

What’s in the Apple Watch Ultra:

But now for the first time there is a really new and better watch in this price range. It doesn’t just differ in appearance from the rather boring Apple Watch Series 8, either In terms of features and technology, it is vastly superior to the standard smartwatch:

  • Larger display and military-grade titanium casing (49mm).
  • Screen twice as bright (2,000 nits).
  • 100 instead of just 50 meters water protected, used as a diving computer.
  • Built-in siren, two speakers and three microphones.
  • More precise dual frequency GPS.
  • Up to 36 hours of running time instead of just 18 hours (in the future after an update even 60 hours).
  • Customizable action button.
  • Useful night vision dial.

If you want all of this, you have to go for the Ultra. What you shouldn’t forget Previously, a normal Apple Watch made of titanium cost well over 800 euros, and the almost 1,000 euros for the Apple Watch Ultra are a real bargainespecially when you consider the currently poor exchange rate.

My thoughts about the weekend: The column aims to provide food for thought and reflect on the “burst of news” of the week towards the end. A small selection of the previous articles in the column:

  • Hey Amazon, things have to get better now
  • Future of the 9 euro ticket: This is how much the successor can cost
  • Smartphone tariffs: 1 GB is still enough for me in 2022 – how can that be?

Ultra is the new Pro for Apple customers

In my opinion, that’s why it’s not just extreme athletes who will choose Ultra. As a reminder: Not everyone who buys an iPhone 14 Pro (Max) really needs all the professional features. But knowing that you can access them at any time is a reassuring feeling for many customers. For the first time, Apple has a comparable product in the smartwatch sector with the Ultra – having it is more important than needing it.

A closer look at the new Ultra:

The current high demand is a good indication for my thesis. If you want an Ultra, you have to be able to wait quite a long time. The new smartwatch is likely to be a success for Apple if it alone generates more sales than the previous edition models. The big guy should be able to do this with ease, and there will probably be a lot more money in Apple’s coffers.

No, the Apple Watch Ultra is not what you might think. It’s not an expensive toy for extremely sporty people, it’s Apple’s key to successfully diversifying an entire product category. Not a mass product, but a new king in the niche.
