The rumors turned out not to be true: Apple is still using the Lightning connector for accessories on the recently introduced iMac. The Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad have not been converted to USB-C – and the prices are also high.
iMac accessories: Apple sticks with the Lightning connector
In a world where USB-C has long since become the standard, Apple is clinging to the Lightning connector with almost nostalgic doggedness – at least when it comes to accessories for the latest Macs. Despite the introduction of the brand new iMac with the powerful M3 chip, there is one downside. The peripherals, i.e. Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad, are still charged via the well-known Lightning connector (Source: heiseonline).
This raises questions, because Apple itself has long since made the leap to USB-C with other products. The iPhone 15 models and the second generation AirPods Pro are just a few examples. Buyers of the new iMac M3 will have to accept that in addition to the USB-C cable, keep a lightning cable ready must.
The prices for the “magical” accessories are anything but magical – at least not in a positive sense. Despite the outdated connection Apple demands hefty sums: The standard Magic Keyboard costs 109 euros. If you want a number pad, you have to shell out 135 euros. If you want Touch ID, you’ll have to pay 185 euros. The Magic Trackpad costs 135 euros, the Magic Mouse 85 euros. Black accessories cost 20 euros extra.
What exactly does a USB-C port offer?
Lightning: Apple relic from times gone by
It remains to be seen when and if Apple will also take the step into the USB-C future with Mac accessories. Until then Users have no other choicethan to stand with one foot in the past and the other in the present.
