One day, when a male guest at the Isono family praised Fune’s homemade pickles, Sazae, intending to be humble, replied with a smile, “Not at all. It’s because you don’t eat delicious food on a daily basis.” Upon hearing this, Namihei scolded Sazae, who also reflected on her actions.
The next day, a different guest from the last one comes to the Isono family. “I hope there won’t be any mistakes this time,” Sazae says with determination, and she politely serves tea and sweets. “Okay, perfect!” she says, confident of success.
However, when Katsuo returns, tragedy strikes. Sazae scolds Katsuo for carelessly taking off his shoes at the entrance, and tells him to line up his shoes with the toes facing the entrance. She also lines up the toes of the guests’ shoes, which were pointing towards the house, saying, “If there are guests’ shoes, they should be lined up like this.” Then, as Katsuo complains, “I’ll just say this for now, guests too, it’s common sense to take your shoes off facing this way (outwards),” to his surprise, a guest is standing right behind him. He had heard everything.
Even the mild-mannered Fune scolds Sazae, saying, “That’s rude to a customer, no matter how you look at it.” Sazae also realizes that she has embarrassed Fune many times, and once again becomes depressed.
Just then, the man who had praised Fune’s homemade pickles comes back to the Isono family. Apparently he’s come to see Sazae, and Sazae feels depressed, thinking, “Oh no, I wonder if he’s still angry.” However, in fact, the opposite is true; the man has taken a liking to Sazae’s cheerfulness and has come to propose marriage to her son, asking, “Would you be my son’s wife?”
Sazae, who is married to Masuo, naturally declined, but she seemed happy, saying, “I still look young. Maybe I looked like I was in my teens?” Incidentally, Sazae’s age is set to 24, while Masuo’s is 28.
The next day, a shocking rumor begins to spread in the town where Sazae and her friends live.
