A 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred near Istanbul, Turkey, shaking the largest city in Turkey.
Turkey’s Emergency Management Agency said on Monday, December 4 (Lindi 13) that the epicenter of the earthquake was 60 kilometers south of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara.
The earthquake did not cause immediate personal or financial damage.
According to a report by France Presse, the earthquake shook the walls of Istanbul on both the Asian and European sides. The published videos show that people have gone out of the buildings to the streets for safety.
Istanbul, Turkey’s most populous city, is located close to the North Anatolia seismic zone, one of the most active seismic zones in the world.
In 1999, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake killed more than 17,000 people in the eastern part of the city.
Istanbul’s population has nearly doubled since then to 16 million people.
In February, two major earthquakes in southeast Turkey killed more than 50,000 people. This earthquake damaged or completely destroyed tens of thousands of buildings in several cities.
