The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, formerly known as the Ministry of Urban Development, implements many welfare schemes of the Modi government. The first decision of the new government is to build more houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

The urban part is handled by this ministry. Modi’s favourite scheme is the Swachh Bharat Mission. There is a scheme to give loans to street vendors, Amrit City Mission, Smart Cities, there is a long list. This ministry also oversees the governance of laws related to real estate (through the Real Estate Regulatory Authority or RERA) and also takes the lead on behalf of the Centre in urban metro rail projects.

What needs to be done

Implementation of Central schemes

PMAY is on track but schemes like AMRUT need further boost. Such schemes encourage states to connect households with basic services like sanitation and water. Same is the case with the affordable rental housing scheme and the much-discussed Smart Cities Mission.

Urban flooding

Khattar has said that solving this disaster will be one of his top priorities. Along with flooding, planning and management of city infrastructure must include the ability to withstand climate change

transport arrangement

Metro alone will not be enough to solve urban transport problems. The country’s cities need infrastructure such as pedestrian and cycle paths to provide safe, convenient green mobility options.
