Mumbai: The process of demolishing the illegal parts of the mosque in Maharashtra’s Dharavi has started. The authorities had earlier backed off from demolishing parts of the church due to protests by locals. Hundreds of people protested against the demolition process in Dharavi by blocking the road on September 21. The authorities held talks with the trustees of the church to calm the situation. The trustees informed about the initiation of the demolition process
The demolition may take some time to complete as the mosque is surrounded by slums, officials said. The official said that a report related to the demolition has been submitted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. .
The action is against the Mehboob Subhani Masjid in Dharavi, one of the important slums of Mumbai. The officials of the Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation claim that a part of the mosque was built illegally. The church is located along the 90 feet road of Dharavi.
A case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Maharashtra Police Act and the Prevention of Destruction of Public Property Act, alleging that some people pelted stones at a BMC vehicle during the protest.
