Havana: A massive earthquake shook the Latin American country of Cuba. According to the report of the US Geological Survey, there was an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8. The earthquake occurred in Bartolome Mazo, Granma province, near the south-eastern coast of the country. Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro worked here during the revolution. Buildings were damaged after the earthquake in Santiago de Cuba.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said the earthquake caused landslides and damaged power lines. The extent of the damage is yet to be estimated. The Cuban president said that now the greatest importance is being given to saving lives.
Local residents told Reuters that it was the biggest earthquake they had ever experienced. Houses and buildings were shaken by the earthquake. Residents of the area said that all the glasses and pots in the houses were broken in the earthquake.
All the buildings and houses in the earthquake area are very old. Therefore, it is estimated that heavy damage may have occurred here. The official media in Cuba has released some pictures of the collapsed roofs, ceilings, walls and windows of the houses. Meanwhile, no tsunami warning has been issued following the earthquake.
