Local authorities reported that 81 people were killed in an attack allegedly carried out by the terrorist group Boko Haram in Yobe, Nigeria. Several people were also reported missing after the attack.

“About 150 suspected Boko Haram terrorists armed with rifles and RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades) attacked Mafa district on over 50 motorcycles at about 4 p.m. on Sunday,” Abdulkarim Dungus, Yobe State Police spokesman, was quoted as saying. AFPWednesday (4/9/2024).

Dungus believes it was a revenge attack for the killing of two Boko Haram terrorists by villagers.

“From these figures, it is known that at least 81 people were killed in the attack,” said local official Bulama Jalaluddin. Fifteen of the bodies have been buried.

In addition, an unspecified number of the dead were from nearby villages who were trapped during the attack.

As is known, Boko Haram and other jihadist groups have been waging a 15-year rebellion in northeast Nigeria that has killed more than 40,000 people.

Central and northwestern Nigeria have been plagued for years by criminal gangs known as “bandits”, who raid villages, kill and kidnap residents, and burn down homes after looting them.
