The United States and Russia have completed the largest prisoner swap since the end of the Cold War, swapping 24 people.
On the 1st, U.S. President Biden announced that 16 Americans and others who had been detained in Russia and Belarus had been released.
Those released include Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan, and Russian human rights activists who had been imprisoned as political prisoners.
Meanwhile, Russians who had been imprisoned in five countries, including the United States, were released and welcomed by President Putin at Moscow airport.
This is the largest exchange of hostages between the United States and Russia since the end of the Cold War, and President Biden emphasized that “all Americans can be proud of this achievement.”
