At least 23 people have died after a bus carrying children on a field trip burst into flames in Thailand.

According to local authorities, a bus carrying children on a field trip burst into flames on the outskirts of Thailand’s capital Bangkok on Sunday.

There were 44 people on board the bus, including children and teachers, and so far 20 children and three teachers have been confirmed dead.

“There was a lot of fire. I saw two children with burns.”

Police say the cause of the accident was that the front tire suddenly exploded, causing flames to spread inside the car.

According to local media, the male driver of the bus fled the scene, but he later turned himself in to the police and was taken into custody.
