14 people died and dozens of others were injured in the fall of a large board in the commercial center of India, Mumbai.
The local media reported on Tuesday, May 14 (May 25) that the police have opened a criminal case against the owner of the plaque.
The 70-meter-wide barge crashed into a fuel pump in eastern Mumbai on Monday evening as a result of strong winds and rain.
Officials said on Tuesday that at least 75 people were injured in the incident and rescue operations are ongoing.
The Mumbai Municipality wrote on the X social network: “44 injured people are currently under treatment and 31 people have been discharged from the hospital and rescue operations are underway at the scene.”
Gaurav Chauhan, an official of the National Disaster Management Authority, said that the falling of the oil pump has complicated the rescue operations. He said: “For fear of fire, we cannot use the equipment and remove the debris with the help of cranes.”
The local media reported that a case of deliberate murder has been registered against the owner of this plaque, “Ego Media”.
City council member Rocky Jadio told AFP that the board was not installed safely and the incident could have been prevented.
She said: “This is not a natural event. If the plank had been installed properly, these deaths would not have happened… This is a mountainous and low-altitude area. was connected.”
Monday’s wind and rain in Mumbai uprooted trees, cut power in some areas and disrupted the city’s rail network.
At least 15 flights have been canceled at Mumbai International Airport.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis wrote on X that his government had ordered a “high-level inquiry” into the incident.
He added that the state government has announced a compensation of 500,000 Indian rupees ($6,000) to the families of each deceased person.
